A three-year planting programme of Zespri’s RubyRed kiwifruit will begin next year in Italian orchards south of Rome.

Last February the Zespri board approved the commercial release in Italy of Zespri RubyRed to supply European markets, which allows 170 hectares to be planted from 2026 to 2028.

This stems from shareholder approval granted in 2019 for the planting of 1000ha of new varieties and is the first time Zespri will have used this allocation.

Valeria Racemoli, the Italian-based community engagement lead for Zespri’s northern hemisphere operations, said partner suppliers will recommend which growers will be offered RubyRed supply contracts.

This will be based on an evaluation of their orchard, access to labour, geographical position and agronomy skills.

She said the relatively quick and easy access to markets makes Italy ideally suited to grow RubyRed and for growers it complements management of other kiwifruit varieties with its flowering, thinning and harvesting.

Racemoli said the volume of northern hemisphere SunGold continues to expand following the favourable producer vote in 2024.

There are approximately 1500 growers in the region overseen by Zespri’s European office – Italy, Greece, France, Japan and South Korea – managing almost 5000ha of Zespri SunGold vines.

Last year they produced 19.9 million trays of SunGold and are aiming for 65 million trays by 2035.

Most of the growers are in Italy, where 1154 manage about 4110ha of SunGold.

France has 99 growers overseeing 443ha, Japan and South Korea 228, managing 417ha combined.

Starting this year, and following successful trials, 70ha of Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit will be planted in Greece, part of a six-year expansion plan for Zespri in the northern hemisphere

Racemoli said Zespri’s northern hemisphere growers are part of the Global Supply (ZGS) programme, established by NZ growers more than 20 years ago to build the Zespri brand and keep Zespri kiwifruit on shelves all year round.

It details orchard management and fruit quality standards that are aligned with Zespri’s requirements for NZ growers. Only those who meet these standards are eligible to join the ZGS programme.

In the 2024-25 season, Zespri sold 220.9 million trays of kiwifruit produced in NZ and the northern hemisphere, of which ZGS contributed 26.5 million trays – 19.9 million SunGold and 6.6 million Green.

This season Racemoli expects ZGS to generate 30 million trays, of which more than 24 million will be SunGold, a 22% increase on last season, and 7 million trays of procured Green.

Italy will supply 2.5 million trays of Green kiwifruit and Greece 4.5 million.

She said northern hemisphere production ensures year-round availability of fruit.

Zespri does not have the supply of Green, Gold and Red Kiwifruit varieties to itself, with other plant breeders developing their own versions, grown in Europe, Chile and South Africa.
